Our Founders
Mary Fagnano,
Co-Founder/Executive Director
Along with her husband, Jay, Mary envisioned an initiative in 2015 to honor the memory of their son, Nick, who passed away in 2014 at the age of 20. With a background in advertising and marketing, Mary applied her passion to keep Nick’s light shining with her business experience to launch the Thrive in Joy Nick Fagnano Foundation as a 501(c)(3) with the goal of encouraging character and service in young people through the inspiration of Nick’s life. While establishing Thrive in Joy, Mary gained experience in the fundraising and nonprofit sector working in Advancement at USC as well as serving as the Development Officer for Hope Street Margolis Family Center in DTLA. Working closely with Thrive in Joy’s Executive Committee, Board Members, staff, partners, and volunteers; Mary has guided the expansion of the Foundation’s C11 Strength of Character Program into five Los Angeles high schools serving students from low-income communities and 20 volunteer teams joining Thrive in Joy on service trips to the Dominican Republic.
Jay co-founded the Thrive in Joy Nick Fagnano Foundation with his wife, Mary, after the loss of their son, Nick, who was struck by lightning in a rare storm that hit Venice Beach unexpectedly July 27, 2014. After the loss of Nick, Jay left his position in the corporate food service industry and launched Thrive Kitchen LA…built around the love of good food shared with family and friends which played such a key role in the Fagnano home. Thrive Kitchen LA serves a diverse client base of academic institutions, professional sports organizations, and private clients. Jay’s knowledge of event planning, finance, staff management, and logistics are integral to the success of the Foundation’s fundraising and community-building events and his expertise and relationships generate significant cost savings as well as revenue contributions for Thrive in Joy’s events. Jay and Nick shared a deep connection through baseball and ingrained in the Foundation’s mission are the principles Jay imparted to Nick as his dad, coach, and his best friend.
